Insights into health and life

Exist

In the book Pond a Connected Existence, there is wisdom that calls out for action:

  • From the chapter “Behavior & Release”:

“The state of extended over-tiredness can lead to general overall unwellness, affected decision-making, and overestimation of abilities. Sleep is essential.”

  • From the chapter “Pliable and Different”:

“Many people think they can’t change; that is false thinking. By design, people are made to adapt, adopt, and be adept.”

  • From the chapter “Luck! What Luck?:

“The importance of preparation cannot be overemphasized. Without it, opportunities are squandered, missed, lost.”

How are these morsels of wisdom connected?

  • With adequate sleep, a person can think more clearly and take the actions necessary to be prepared.
  • Adaptability contributes to preparation for the future. Adaptability is available to those who are willing to examine their decision-making and change when a decision no longer brings clarity.
  • One can never be prepared for all events, no matter how prepared, because life is so unknown. Sleep prepares for handling life’s uncertainty and refocuses perspective about one’s ability to change and receive the future.

Investing for a rainy day, the good and bad news

(taken from my article “Good News, Bad News: Investing for a Rainy Day” on HealingAnswers.com)

rain

This blog post is not about investing money. It is about investing in what’s around you—in friendships, in committed relationships, in neighborly relations, in family, and in the community. Investing in these important relationships is investing for a rainy day at its best!

Good News: Investing in family, friends and community builds a safety net

“Investing in friendships and giving and taking from friends is nourishing. Investing in relationships is natural and is needed to live a balanced life. Investing in family—children, children’s children, siblings, cousins, and so on builds a network of support that is reliable. Investing in communal activities builds a network of support that nourishes and strengthens the individual community members and the collective group.”… from “Oneself—Living”.

Investing time is necessary in order to build a safety net for when life becomes difficult or too hard to bear alone. Often, people put work obligations before obligations to family, friends, and community. This behavior has become acceptable in society, but it is short-sighted. The more a person gives to the relationships that truly matter, the more protection from the surprises that occur in life. Of course, a person must perform work obligations with an enthusiastic spirit and with focus, but work obligations should be one section of life, not all of life.

Good News: Investing in family, friends and community supports good health

The more people invest in their relationships and community, the more balanced their health. Time spent with people who are meaningful creates memories that enrich beyond the moments in which they occurred. Positive memories are better, but even negative memories create experiences that build and nurture if the negative experiences are within the realm of realistic disagreeable treatment. In other words, interactions with family members, friends, and community acquaintances do not always have to be positive for the investment to be worthwhile. Learning to negotiate the varying needs of the various people is balancing.

Tip:

Choose a community betterment activity that excites you so you’ll want to participate. If you enjoy the arts, volunteer at a museum or in an enhancing-the-neighborhood project. If you prefer working on your own, volunteer with community building or cleaning projects. There are enough volunteer opportunities to suit all personalities.

Bad News: Not investing is unwise

“Non-investment in relationships with others leads to loneliness, sadness, aloofness, insensitivity, and unsureness. Non-investment in friendship—foolish. Non-investment in marriage—incorrect behavior. Non-investment in intrafamilial connections—mistake. Non-investment in neighborly relations—short-sighted. Non-investment in societal obligations—selfish thinking.”… from “Oneself—Living”.

The less people invest in their relationships and community, the less balanced their health. Simple as that.

Conclusion

Investing for a rainy day means being prepared for whatever may come. Rain is not negative, but it can cause a change in plans. The same is true for changes in health, family structure (through births, deaths, divorce, etc.), and societal balance. Being prepared means planning ahead—making sure to invest in the connections that truly matter.

Health throughout aging, post #7

Post 131-huff'n'puff flowers

Many people want to age well without investing in wellness. Just doesn’t happen. Aging well involves lifelong commitment. The commitment? Awareness. Awareness of growth and awareness of decline. Both states exist simultaneously and they present us with daily treasures and possibilities.

There are three key steps to maintaining health throughout the aging process. The first step is proper breathing, When we breathe properly, we bring possibilities to our existence. We are aware of the next two steps, but perhaps we don’t realize their key-ness. They are love of oneself and connection to others.

Breathing properly

The last six blog posts have extolled the value of proper breathing.—breathing that is full and varied, breathing that is enlivened through movement and exercise, breathing that is contented, and breathing that is joined with others. The first step towards aging well is breathing well.

Caring for and loving oneself

There are several blog posts about self-love which you can find in the category titled “Self-love”. The more we care for our needs, the more we can give to others and to the world in which we live. Loving oneself is not a selfish thing; it is natural and necessary for maintaining good health throughout the aging process.

Connecting to others

There are several blog posts about connections which you can find in the category titled “Connections”. “Togetherness is vital for normal human development.” – from my upcoming book, Awaiting Light—Understanding the Development of the Soul. People are designed to connect to other people,  to nature, and to the other inhabitants of the world.

How to proceed

There are no magic bullets for aging well. There are no super foods or super exercises. There is simply living life with awareness—awareness of one’s surroundings and awareness of one’s place in them. Mistakes get made along the lifepath. If they are not too serious then their impact is not too seriously felt.

Here are the things to do:

  • Drink water when you’re thirsty (no other drinks)
  • Sleep the amount of time that keeps you functioning energetically (not easy for parents of infants, but somewhat doable even for them)
  • Eat foods that are satisfying to the body (see the blog posts in the category titled “Food”)
  • Move a lot—take breaks, walk, dance, skip, etc.
  • Pay attention to the activities that pull your attention so that you know the things that you naturally enjoy. Then make time to do them.
  • Spend time with family and friends. We need them when we are up and when we are down. And they need us too.
  • Spend time in nature!
  • Work with a smile on your face and gratitude in your heart!
  • Be satisfied!

These are the things that Spiritual Presence wants us to know. These things help lead us through life in a fulfilling way. These things bring awareness, possibilities, and vitality!

Post 130-breathe

Aging is manageable when breathing in unison, post #5

Post 132-breathe-in unison

Breathing is key to longevity and quality of life. The rhythmic movements of the diaphragm and lungs determine vitality. Supplying oxygen, supplying force.

Joining together in song is longevity and life-quality bait.  The more we sing with others, the more possibility of bypassing lower quality living.

Singing in a choir

People who take part in choral singing increase their quality of life, if the atmosphere in the group is uplifting. When ill-thoughts abound in the group, there is no increase in quality of life—and there is no decrease either. The actions of the organizer are no more influential than the actions of a single member; therefore, each member contributes to the overall atmosphere of elevation or neutrality. People who sing in a choir need to be cognizant of their contribution to the group besides their harmonies. (This statement does not mean that people who sing in choirs should not attend a practice because they had a hard day. It means they should be participating in the group because they really want to be there. They should not let idiosyncrasies of others in the group lower their group experience.)

Singing in a de facto choir

People who take part in group singing, such as at a religious service or a music concert, can also have their quality of life increased by the experiences, if the atmosphere is transcendent. In these circumstances, the actions of each participant is less important to the overall achievement of the group. Even the singing of one song by the group can influence quality of life. Singing from the heart is the key ingredient.

Breathing and singing

Contented breathing can occur when a group (of three or more) joins force in song. The actual sound does not need to be beautiful, but the intent does. Singing to feel joyousness, singing to entertain one another, and singing to satisfy the need to sing bring connectedness that is beyond ordinary communication. (For an explanation of contented breathing, see the blog post “Aging is manageable when breathing is contented, post #3”).

Singing alone

The need to sing is stronger in some people. It is a natural, soul-bestowed need. People who feel they must sing should not bottle-up this need. They require song in their ears, in their throat, and in their entire being. The reverberation of sound in the entire being brings balance and connectedness for them. When they sing, whether in a group or alone, transcendence can occur if they understand the force of the self-made music. This last statement also applies to people who create music using instruments.

That’s it for now. We’ll explore breathing more in the next post.

Addicted to screens? The first step is to acknowledge it.

Post 121 Addiction to screens

(Rather than use the term LCD addiction, I’ll use a term that is becoming known—screen addiction.)

I do EGC work with a woman who suffers from screen addiction, but she is too embarrassed to admit it. She goes to sleep after she has checked her email, Facebook, website, and app score. When she awakens, she checks them all again. She eats breakfast with one hand handling her food and the other hand handling her smartphone. Before leaving the house for work, she spends an hour on her computer. During her breaks, she’s on her smartphone—not talking, but playing her favorite game. After work and running a few errands, she’s home watching TV, a movie on her computer, or playing her favorite computer game. And so her days go. She does get together with friends occasionally and does participate in an exercise class once a week, but even then, her mind often darts to the phone in her purse.

She thinks issues such as lack of challenge at work and lack of focus are her main issues, but they are not. Her main issue is lack of connection: too little connection with other people face to face, too little connection with nature and nature’s creatures, too little connection with her own capabilities and talents, and too little connection with seeking sustenance through intertwined endeavors (intertwined endeavors means participating in activities that elevate oneself spiritually and self-ly—a topic for another post).

Her addiction to screens is preventing her from connecting, and she doesn’t realize that the answer to her issues and to balance in her life start with turning away from the screens. Less time  companioning with technology.

If you realize that you spend too much time looking at and interacting with a screen (other than for work purposes), acknowledge this fact. That’s the first step. The second step is different for each person, but regardless, movement away from screen addiction is possible. Focusing on connections is the best way to overcome addictive behaviors.

“Connection is the key to good health:  connection to other people, connection to one’s environment, connection to environmental conditions, connection to other creatures, connection to oneself, and connection to spiritual presence. These connections bring all aspects of elevated, balanced, and purposeful living into a person’s reality. These connections are key for all people; no one is exempt.”

Spiritual connection exists within the soul

Post 97-wild flowers

I’m working on book #6, which I mentioned in passing in an earlier post (Yes, I know books 4 and 5 aren’t out yet. Book #5 is in second draft and book #4 is on hold.). The main subject is the soul, and the information I am receiving is exciting.

Here’s a small taste…

“Spiritual connection exists within the soul. It is a bound element that enables the soul to achieve transcendent thought. Spiritual connection enables people to live within the cycling nature of life and to do so in varied and fresh arrangements. Spiritual connection provides capabilities to choose, mold, and direct living that is purposeful and fulfilling. Purposeful and fulfilling can occur without acknowledging the role of spiritual connection, but it is there, with or without the acknowledgement. Spiritual connection exists in all living things, but its binding to the soul is what elevates the possibilities of humans. Despite the interconnectedness of the soul to the body, people function without awareness of the soul’s participation in daily and routine actions…”

Learned satisfaction

photo083YU4RG

I have spent the last three weeks in Los Angeles imparting Spiritual Presence awareness, connection, and nudging. The transfer of wisdom from Spiritual Presence was through individual sessions with people, an organized energy gathering, get-togethers with friends and relatives, and encounters with people on the plane, in restaurants, and by farmers’ market stalls. A welcome beginning for much more to come.

I have experienced EGC sessions with people who are needing the wisdom that Spiritual Presence can give, and they have been eye-opening, cathartic, and beyond expectation. The people receive specific ways to bring balance and clarity into their lives, and witnessing this process is gratifying and amazing for me. People need the same basic things in life, yet the ways to achieve them are varied and individualized. Connection to Spiritual Presence brings the actions and revised thinking required to live with purpose and satisfaction.

I have been living with a cousin of mine who challenges and expands my connection to understanding and wisdom. Our invigorating conversations have led me to the subject of book #6. It will explore and explain issues of the soul.

I have walked and walked and walked this fascinating city, which has led to further understanding about people, animals, and jumbled living. I have eaten the most wonderful produce purchased at neighborhood farmers’ markets and have mostly eaten vegan and raw foods. My body’s feeling good!

My connection to Spiritual Presence has developed during this time, and I am learning about well-being, forgiveness, and satisfaction. I am grateful to my cousin for introducing me to people who are open to the wisdom that flows through me. I am grateful for my family who supports my new-found purpose.

Heading back home soon with renewed Vitality!

Nature is the best entertainment

Post 95 nature-1

  • Is going to the mall satisfying for the soul? No, not even to people who love shopping (even if they think so).
  • Is playing on the computer or watching a viral video satisfying for the soul? No, not even if the viral video is about a wonderful person.
  • Is sitting at a restaurant satisfying for the soul? It can be, if you are sitting with people who are enriching, but the atmosphere at any restaurant is not enriching for the soul.

Connecting with nature is satisfying for the soul. It just is, because we were designed to be part of nature. Along the way, we lost the importance of our place in nature and we need to get it back. In general, our lives have become very cut off from nature, especially for those who live in large cities or spend too much time in cars or public transportation. There are people who work at staying connected, but they are not the majority.

Post 95-nature 3

How to reconnect with nature

  • Plan regular hikes and actually go on the hikes. The hikes don’t have to be long, but they should be in green spaces.
  • Visit parks and nature areas.
  • Visit humane zoos and petting zoos. Contact with animals is an important part of connecting with nature.
  • Shop at farmers’ markets and find farms that have fruit picking. And go pick fruit!
  • Add more plants and potted flowers inside your home.
  • Visit places with water: beaches, lakes, rivers, and springs.
  • Visit botanical gardens.

Try being more connected to nature and see how entertaining it can be. And at the same time, your soul with be nourished and you will become more balanced.

Post 95-nature 2

Why do we need spiritual connection?

Post 92-spiritual connection

  • We need spiritual connection because our lives are insignificant without it.
  • We need spiritual connection to help us weather stormy and difficult times.
  • We need spiritual connection when nature overcomes us with its beauty or its fearsomeness.
  • We need spiritual connection as a means to fathom life and death.
  • We need spiritual connection if we are lonely or hurt.
  • We need spiritual connection filling our lives with purpose, elevation, and reason for striving.

Spiritual connection can be found on one’s own or in a group. The main thing to know about spiritual connection is that it is available to all equally. No group has a claim on higher access to spiritual connection.

People who dedicate themselves to spiritual connection at the expense of connecting to the people around them are not living spiritual connection correctly. Spiritual connection is not an excuse for turning one’s back on the needs of other people.

Spiritual connection can be a way to understand the world around if we can see the spirituality in all living things.

Spiritual connection fills the world with beauty, drama, and interactions.

Spiritual connection is the basis for ethical and caring treatment of all living things, including people.

Spiritual connection = guidance and ability to weather the ebbs and flows of life

Post 91-spiritual connection

Spiritual connection is the given; not believing is the fashion. To not believe is in; to believe is kept quiet.

To acknowledge belief in a spiritual presence is hard for many people, even if they believe. Those who don’t believe, don’t believe loudly and look down on those who do. Even those who are vocal about their connection are often uncomfortable when the don’t believers question them.

For those who want to believe, but are unable to connect, here is what the connection can do for you:

  1. Connection to spiritual presence can engender feelings of well-being, “even when the life we have created or received seems incorrect.”
  2. Connection to spiritual presence can support when life is daunting. “A person who has a sense of spiritual presence will weather the ebbs and flows of life more confidently, more peacefully, and less daunted than others who question spiritual presence.
  3. Connection to spiritual presence provides a sense of fitting into something beyond ourselves. “Yes, there is meaning in our lives and in our existence, but humans cannot fathom it. That doesn’t mean that you should stop the search; rather, be satisfied with the answers you find.

“Spiritual support is available to people who want it. The way to bring spiritual support into your life is to imagine having a companion accompanying and sharing life’s path. This sense of sharing and of not being alone can sustain you through difficult life events.”

“The influences of nature were once the major influences on people. Some people and cultures run their lives around the cycles of nature, but the number of people who are nature-centric lessens with developments in technology. The ways in which people are affected and driven by nature are many. Being cut off from nature contributes to lowered attentiveness which in turn decreases attention capabilities. The connection to flora and fauna significantly 1) broadens and heightens understanding of cycles and fluctuations; 2) develops appreciative and inquisitive capabilities; and 3) causes people to examine and work with vegetation that aid human life and animals that enhance human existence. When people allowed fluctuations of time, season, and life to govern their lives, they developed more attentive skills.”  from the chapter “What is Attention Capability?” in Oneself—Living (soon to be published).

Without a constant connection to nature, the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time is lessened and unappreciated, the ability to focus is shortened, and the ability to be resourceful is lessened. Not for everyone, but for most.

The lessening and shortening of concentration, focus and resourcefulness have led to wide-scale lack-of-attention problems. Occasionally, the problems have additional contributors such as genetic or hereditary deficits or human-inflicted causes (abuse or improper treatment). Lack-of-attention problems have become big business, and the causes are being overlooked, while the symptoms are being treated or over-treated.

The best way to reverse attention lack-of is to rediscover nature!

  • More walks in green areas!
  • More visits to parks and nature areas!
  • More visits to petting zoos and to farms that allow the animals to be touched!
  • More fruit picking and visits to farmers’ markets!
  • More plants and flowers inside the home and more attention to landscaping outside the home!
  • More observation of roadside scenery, of the sky and of the landscape around us!
  • More visits to water: beaches, lakes, rivers and springs!
  • More visits to botanical gardens and other city gardens!
  • More participation in community gardens and garden clubs!
  • More making of mud pies and castles in the sand!
  • More walking barefoot in the grass!
  • More playing of instruments! (Oops-this hint belongs in another post, but it applies here too 🙂

Not liking someone

Post 74-not liking

People are generally nice to people they know. Not always, but generally so. The more a person circulates in the world, the less he or she can know the people who cross his or her path, and the less these other people can be liked. Politeness and mannered interactions are not being discussed here. The subject is liking or not liking.

People are nice or not nice to others, depending on upbringing and temperament. When a person is unkind to someone they don’t know, the person usually feels little or no remorse because the other person has little significance. When a person is unkind to a friend or family member, the feelings will be different unless the two people are already at odds. Unkind behavior has an effect when either person cares for the other and is hurt by the unexpected negative behavior. Unkind behavior wounds and scars relationships and people.

Being friendly, but feeling disdain inside, reaches the other person in an intangible sort of way. Same with pretending to care or pretending to feel warmth when warmth does not exist inside. Expecting ourselves to be nice to everyone who crosses our paths is difficult, but mostly when we let ourselves feel unkindness inside towards the others and towards our own selves.

The more we feel nice feelings towards ourselves, the more we can like others. The less satisfied we are with ourselves, the more people we dislike. Even when we travel the world and meet many people, we can experience empathy, interest, and pleasure with these encounters if we are empathetic, interested in, and pleased with ourselves.

Not liking ourselves leads to not liking others

The work begins within!

When we set our alarm clock…

Post 69-People

“Certainty. We all want certainty. And sometimes we get it. When we prepare for things, we often get the desired outcome. When we measure and work in an exacting manner, our cakes taste right, they look beautiful, they make the eaters happy. When we wash our hands, they are clean. When we allow enough time, we (usually) arrive at our destination on time. When we set our alarm clock, we wake up on time—usually. When we build buildings with strong foundations, they keep us secure—except in times of war or destructive natural disasters.

-from the chapter “Certainty Relatively” in The Gift of Intuitive, Dedicated Comfort

When we set our alarm clock, the chance of waking up at the time we chose is somewhat guaranteed. When we plan our day, the chance of getting our chores/job/errands/extras done has increased. When we think about the family members we should reach out to, we sometimes reach out. When we remember that we should call a loved one, we occasionally call. When we consider the importance of connecting with a sibling or other close relative, we know it’s important, but we might or might not make the time for the connection. And so it goes.

Life is busy and if we don’t plan ahead, important things can get forgotten.

Compassion

Blog 66-CompassionSome people say that people are not compassionate by nature. That is not true. People are compassionate; compassion is part of the design. Women and men, in varying degrees depending on their hormonal make-up, are compassionate.

Compassion can be displayed in the ways in which people interact with one another, with animals, with inanimate objects (such as knick knacks and clothing), and with gems. In general, compassion should be shown towards living and breathing creatures; the compassion towards the nonliving items is compassion misplaced.

When a person confuses the recipient of compassion—the nonliving item in place of the living creature—something has occurred in that person’s life that upset the natural order for compassion. People are meant to feel compassion for other people, and not feeling compassion is the incorrect response. No! Compassion is kindness presented internally which stimulates warm and caring feelings for the people, animals, and nature in one’s surroundings.

To truly feel compassion for another person, one simply has to live the design.

Thoughts about people

Hearts

When we think about others, our thinking is colored by what we think about them. In other words, how we feel about them and how we feel they affect us, affects how we assess them. Also, our thinking about ourselves affects our thinking about others.

If someone has been kind to us, our opinion of this person could be kind in turn, or not, depending on if we think we deserved the kindness. If our opinion is that we didn’t deserve the kindness (because we know that we were neglectful, distracted, or undeserving), then we may consider this person to be foolish or lacking in deservedness as well. Our opinion will be negative rather than positive, when positive would have been the balanced thinking. The more we are balanced in our thinking about ourselves, the more we can evaluate others clearly and with objectivity.

How we see ourselves is how we see others. We must aim to be self-kind and self-forgiving and self-loving.

More to come on this topic…

Living = valuable

Once upon a time, there was a man who had a rubber band that he used in his everyday life. Sometimes he used it to keep things together, sometimes he used it to separate things, and sometimes he used it when he was bored. He had one rubber band, and he took care of it because it was valuable to him.

One day, he was distracted and the rubber band fell. He searched and searched, but could not find it. His determination to find it lessened, and he gave up. He realized that the value of the rubber band was not only its usefulness, but also his attachment to it. He realized that the rubber band would no longer be in his life and he changed his outlook about it. The rubber band was once his to use, and now he had to move on.

The man found a new rubber band that was the same color, but not the same elasticity. He used it less, and found other implements to help him with separating and joining things. He used several different implements and became attached to none of them.

The daily doings for this man did not change. He simply changed his methods. The rubber band, the second rubber band, and the other implements were simply ways to help him.

The message: When one thing fulfills many needs, its importance is exaggerated. All things are limited in their usefulness and in their ability to satisfy requisites. When things are expected to fulfill more than their normal capabilities, people are expecting too much. Things are simply the tools/entertainment/aids to a life that is assisted. More than things, people require interaction with people, animals, and plants. Things are not equal to living entities, and things should never be valued higher than people or animals or even plants.

Spiritual Presence

Post 56-spiritual presence

Spiritual Presence was once a normal consideration in a person’s life. When people were more connected to nature, they naturally felt a connection beyond. In today’s world, our disconnect from nature has disconnected us from the natural connection to Spiritual Presence.

Here is information about Spiritual Presence from the chapter “How to Connect to Spiritual Presence” in my book, Pond a Connected Existence:

“The awareness [of connection to Spiritual Presence] is felt in many ways: intuition, gut feelings, sense of security or buttress or admonishment, hearing a voice or a whisper or a sense of a voice, vibrations throughout the body, flashes of knowing or of understanding, …, constant feeling of clear direction, flash of inspiration or clarity, signals of peace…

And from the chapter “Connections” in my book, The Gift of Intuitive, Dedicated Comfort:

“Spiritual presence is actually much easier to ascertain than many people believe. By observing nature, the actions of babies, the movement of the seasons, the shenanigans of animals, the idiosyncrasies of the opposite sex, and the idiosyncrasies of one’s own sex, a person can be filled with amazement at the complexity and richness of the world. This amazement should inspire reaching for connectedness to the energy from the true source of healing.”

Spiritual Presence is available to all, when the populace let themselves be open.

Book #2—on its way!

Post 49-book 2

I have finished proofing the text of book #2, and I’m so excited that I’m writing a blog about this book. Its title is Pond a Connected Existence– Insights into Health and Life. Pond? As in ponder? No, as in “collect into a pond or large puddle”. This is the title I received. If anyone reading my blog has insight into this title, please share.

The topics discussed in this book include:

  • Is there such a thing as luck? Nope.
  • Is there such a thing as ADHD? Hmmm.
  • Are we obligated to pay our taxes? Yep, and to clean up trash in our community.
  • Can chaos in a marriage go away? Yes!

The book contains 13 wisdom essays that join The Gift of Intuitive, Dedicated Comfort in presenting wisdom from beyond us.

I’ll sign off with a quote from Pond a Connected Existence:

“Knowing what to do to keep healthy is basic required knowledge. Knowing what to eat or how much to drink to stay hydrated are the most obvious keys to good health. Understanding the need and frequency of sleep is required as well. Health is not the villain to be battled or feared; health is the means to meaningful living and ultimate satisfaction with one’s life. Health—physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.”

Christmas doings

Post 49-Christmas‘Tis the season to be thinking about family and friends and gathering and connecting. It is not the season for envy and anger and distance and overtime.

The holiday season can be filled with so much anxiety that the holiday loses its glow. The glow is the important aspect of the holiday. The glowing faces of children seeing a Christmas tree, the glowing faces of strangers experiencing holiday lights together, the glowing expressions as people wish one another happy holidays.

Taking the time to remember to experience the holiday is key. Be sure to schedule time to experience the beauty and rhythm of this very special time.

Wishing all a happy and glowing Christmas!

Conflict among unacquainted dwellers

Post 47-conflict

conflict, n. competitive action of incompatible people

among, prep. in.

unacquainted , adj. unfamiliar.

dwellers, n. inhabitants.

Conflict among unacquainted dwellers is the source of most discord in the world. The key word is unacquainted because when an acquaintance is made there is usually less conflict. Especially when the dwellers live in close surroundings. Neighbors not knowing their neighbors can lead to a sense of separateness and uncaring. Cousins who are not in contact with one another because of familial disagreements have a diminished sense of belonging. Siblings who lose connection because of distance or disinterest have a lessened sense of completion. City A residents have little care for City B residents. and so it goes…

conflict, n. competitive action between characters in a work of fiction that drives the action of the plot.

among, prep. by the joint action of.

unacquainted , adj. not knowledgeable.

dwellers, n. those who exist in a given setting.

Conflict among unacquainted dwellers. In a novel, conflict brings interest and  momentum and plot. The characters are dwellers in a realm that is unknown to them except as the author sees fit to join them. The characters do not really choose their actions, the author does. The characters do not really inhabit a location; they simply float in the chosen locale.

The key difference between living people and created characters is the ability to choose actions, reactions, and position (not a location, but a point of view). Choosing to stay unfamiliar with others, choosing to distance from because it’s too hard to make an effort, choosing not to contact or assist or be truthful with. The choice is the main component in conflict—choosing to see the other as unworthy or unbearable or unsatisfactory. Choice is the wonderful thing about being human and our failing.  Because choosing to be kind, caring, and supportive should be the right choices all the time.

Among dwellers who have no unacquainted fellow inhabitants, there is little conflict. Obviously no single person can know every other person. The goal is to approach each person as a potential self. People are so different and yet so similar. Very hard to see this connectedness because of societal differences, but it is there nonetheless. The choice is to be open and not discount. Each person has a soul that should be cherished. Each person has a need for survival and nurturing. All the same, not so different.
